Sami

Sami has a rich archaeological history, with evidence of habitation dating back to the Early Helladic period (3rd millennium BC).
The Archaeological Museum of Sami houses many important discoveries, making it one of the most significant sites in Kefalonia.

During the Classical period, Sami flourished as a city-state and held sway over the eastern part of the island. The city even minted its own bronze and silver coins, bearing the city’s monogram.

Today, visitors can explore the ruins of the two citadels, located on Paleokastro and Agioi Fanentes hills, which are surrounded by impressive fortifications. Additionally, part of the ancient coastal wall was discovered on the beach.

After 188 BC, during the Roman period, the prosperity of Sami continued to grow. Public buildings were constructed, such as baths, an aqueduct, and a fountain edifice, while the private residences of the wealthy were adorned with mosaics, cisterns, and marble.

Sami today offers a delightful blend of traditional Greek island charm and modern amenities, making it an excellent destination for both relaxation and exploration.
